I began reading a book last week called CREDO by Ray Pritchard. The book is solely focused on the Apostles Creed, an ancient document that can be traced back to 120ad. If this date is accurate it will have been written 90 years after Christ's public ministry, and about 30 years after the last book of the bible was written (Revelation). Here's is the Apostles Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of Heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His holy Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and buried,
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead,
He ascended into Heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead,
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of the saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
I am a few chapters into it and I am already enjoying it. As you can tell from the Apostle's Creed that it is full of doctrine. Doctrine is something that isn't studied much in our day. The Apostle Paul said this to a young pastor...
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires - 2 Timothy 4:3 (nas)
Solid doctrine is important. I look forward to reading through this book! (By the way, if you are interested in a one page devotional book that takes you through solid doctrine each day of the year, Paul Enns wrote one called Approaching God. You can get a used copy for less that $2 here. You can also buy a new one at a christian bookstore for less that $15.)
