Kidology

This morning as everyone was frantically getting ready for school, Amber was making a cup of coffee to take with her. She asked Madi to get her a spoon out of the drawer. Madi said to her, "Can I have a spoon... please?" Amber said, "yes please", with a bit of a chuckle in her voice. Madi then said, "You almost forgot your manners this morning. Manners are for adults too, not just kids."

Haven't we all been there, where our kids go Opie on us, and ask us why it's different for kids? While this is labeled as Kidology, (a blog where my kids, well mostly Madi, give the insight of a child) there's a deeper thought here. We ask kids and teenagers to live a certain way...

  • You shouldn't watch that... while you and your wife watch a movie you wouldn't watch with the kids

  • You shouldn't listen to that ... while your country music sends the message of adultery

  • You need to read your bible... while you haven't read it in weeks (or months)

  • You need to respect others... while you disrespect your mate, and those in the workplace

  • You need to get your priorities right... while you send the message that you care more about work then your family

You get the picture. The things we tell our kids and students, we too ought to be living out as well. When we don't, then we model a life full of dead religion, which doesn't mean anything but a bunch of rules and legalism. The advice we give, is the advice we should take. After all, "It's for adults too, not just kids."
