"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (lies within) will be in you." - John 14:16-17 (esv)
The Holy Spirit lies within each believer. Jesus called Him the Helper, depending on which version you use. Rightly so, He helps us understand, when we don't really get it. He gives us peace, when we feel anxious and unstable. He intercedes for us, when we don't know what to pray. He helps us make it through, when we feel like giving up. How does he help us make it through??? Is it something mystical within us? No. One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to help us remember. Remember what? Answers to a test we crammed the night before? Not quite. It's found in John 14:16
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, He will teach
you all things and bring to your remembrance
all that I have said to you." - John 14:26 (esv)
Many times, at the precise moment needed, the Holy Spirit will bring something from the Bible to our remembrance that we need to help us make it through. Here's a question...
How are we gonna remember
something we haven't read?
That's why it is vitally important to have a consistent intake of the word of God. What are some ways to do that?
- It may be catching a message on itunes (thousands of free messages!)
- It may be consistently being at church to hear the teaching of the bible.
- It may (should be) from a time you have with God personally one on one from His word.
The latter by far is the best way. Ask Steve Whitcomb about this, he calls it (and so does the greek) a Rhema. A Rhema is a personal word from God delivered just to you. Steve defines it like this, "A specific word for a specific circumstance." It's not an audible voice, if that's happening to you, quit eating pizza so late at night. It's a message just for you from the word of God. The Holy Spirit will bring that to your remembrance! But...How can we remember something we haven't read?!? Another ministry the Holy Spirit has is to guide us in the truth.
"When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come." - John 16:13 (esv)
As we read the bible, the Holy Spirit guides us into the truth. He will illuminate our minds; turn the light on for us as we read the bible. He guides us in the word, teaches us what it mea
ns, how to apply it to our life, and bring it to our remembrance at the time we need it. That's the ministry of the Holy Spirit that lies within God's children. That's how the Holy Spirit brings us through things that we were never meant to go through alone. Again, how can He help us remember what we haven't read?

How's your bible reading? The next time He prompts you to read, the next time he speaks to you in a service, the next time He shows you something from His word - listen to it, write it down! He may use that to help you make it through something that lies ahead. Remember, we don't know what lies ahead, but we DO know what (or Who) lies within.
