Tonight I was able to speak in the middle school. Wow, let me brag a little on what God is doing in the trailer next door. As I stood in the back of the room, I Observed 7th and 8th graders who genuinely worshipped. Shawn Sherwood has been helping me with the middle school ministry for almost a year now. He's done a pretty good job. A few months ago Shawn asked me if he could put an altar up. I thought it was a good idea, so we went to Home Depot, got some wood, and Shawn built an alter. I had no idea how much of a good idea it was. Every week there are students that go down during worship and bring it to Jesus on the altar. I loved seeing that.Last week Shawn began a series built around Ephesians 5:15. He spoke to them concerning what was the best question ever. Of course in light of this verse, the best question is, "What is the WISE thing to do?" Tonight I shared with them what I thought was one of the WORST or "dumbest" questions ever.
Have you ever been asked a dumb question? Sure you have. Right up there at the top is when someone calls your home phone and asks, "Oh, are you at home?" Are you serious, that is a pretty dumb question! But, one of the worst questions ever, in my opinion is when we doubt God by asking (or thinking), "Can God really do this in my life?" Whether it's witnessing to a friend, God doing something in my family, helping me defeat a sin, or God using me; If we ask God if He can really do that in our life is one of the dumbest questions I can think of. WHY? Well, here's what God's word says:
1. With God all things are possible (Luke 1:37)
2. I can do all things in God's strength (Philippians 4:13)
3. He is able to make all grace abound towards us (2 Corinthians 9:8)
4. He is able to do far more than I can think or ask (Ephesians 3:20)
If that's what God says, why do we doubt??? Which we all do from time to time. I'm a pastor and sometimes I doubt that God can... When we say, "God, I need you to... do this for me", but verbally or mentally say, "But, can you really?" - It's a dumb question. If God's word says He is able, then HE IS ABLE!!! No matter what. We know it in our head, but when it comes to the heart of decision time, our heart fails to really believe God can do what he said He can do. We had one point of application tonight and here it is. We've got to boldly go to God and ask confidently, "God I need you to do this... and I believe you can do it!" To end the night, we put on a little Crowder and again, students filled the altar bringing things to Jesus. I'm proud of having students in our ministry that want to change the world, starting with themselves!
