Be still, are you kidding me?

Be still!!! Are you crazy?!!?! Those of you who know me understand that for me to be still for any length of time is like trying to put toothpaste back into the tube! I have a hard time being still. Some of my worst childhood memories were the times when my mom said to me, "Now this stuff is expensive, don't touch it". Impossible! I still remember, a few years after I was married, Amber and I were given some Disney tickets. While at Disney, Amber, myself, and Ashlee my 12 year old sister n' law were in a store doing some shopping. I couldn't sit still so Ashlee and I began to bounce a six inch golf ball back and forth. That only lasted a few minutes as the ball bounced into a display of collectible shot glasses.

I am currently reading a book by Chip Ingram. It's entitled: "God as He longs for you to see Him." It's a book about the attributes of God. The first three chapters are on how to intimately know God, since He already intimately knows us (that blew my mind as I thought about it). Ingram quotes part of Psalm 46:10...

"Be still and know that I am God."

Have you ever tried to do this? How long did you do it for? A few weeks ago, I grabbed a Chick-Fil-A sandwich from our "Christian fast food place", and went down to Stinson Park, to "sit and think", or in other words to "Be still and realize that God is God". It didn't last very long. Ingram challenges his readers with this statement right after he quotes Psalm 46:10, "Until we are ready to be still, we will not be ready to know God." I gave that sentence some thought. In our fast paced society, when do we have time to stop what we are doing and just mentally soak in the fact that God is God? I say "soak" because soaking in a hot bath is very relaxing for some (more ladies than men, It freaks me out - but then again I can't sit still, much less "soak still"). Maybe the reason we are so tense is because we never take time to SIT. No cell phone... no Ipod... no palm pilot... - just sitting, alone, to "know that God is God". Do we have time to be still and get to know God a little? I think Ingram is right, "Until we are ready to be still, we will not be ready to know God."
